Steve Coleman and Five Elements
25/03/02 La Cigale, Paris

The sound-quality is good enough to give you a vividly impression of this very diversified music and the wonderful atmosphere of that concert. It begins with slow tunes - among others with ˇLush Lifeˇ (B. Strayhorn). Later a group of four Cuban female singers appears and sings ˇGiant Stepsˇ (Coltrane) and ˇLush Lifeˇ. It is interesting to hear Steve Coleman and Jonathan Finlayson improvising over ˇGiant Stepsˇ. Even during long and difficult passages (on the second CD) the audience is so enthusiastic that it shows in an impressive manner how much this highly developed music has that direct and original effect which has made Jazz so convincing. Steve Coleman answers the enthusiasm of the audience and a Ping-Pong of communication arises with an infectious atmosphere.
