Hello! Are all still alive? Cool Smile

I would like to understand what the title “Motherland Pulse” means. Is that the pulse of the motherland – the pulse of Africa?

The tune begins and ends with a heartbeat played by the bass-drum. The heartbeat is the first we heard when we were a baby in our mothers belly. In a figurative sense the primal rhythm of this culture is the beat of mother Africa.

Is that right? Can you help me?

Manfred

Hey Manfred,

I think the motherland pulse name is coming from the Chicago city and the atmosphere there.

Thank you Dim!
Thank you Charles!

Nice to “meet” you here again!

Dim, since weeks I’m following your recommendations of 1998 recordings: Melkweg, Dortmund, Bengalore, Saalfelden … great, much joy!!
This music is quite different from the recent music. So I had to change over a bit. It’s very dancing – from my point of view. Wonderful!

There are so many recordings in your FTP now that recommendations are very helpful.

Could you record the concert at La Vilette some days ago?

Maybe a great festival overall?
An issue which seems to become less important in Europe? Sadly!

Hello,

I think that of course Motherland Pulse refer to Africa.
I read recently that Chicago had a kind of motherland pulse for Steve also.
Some elements must be common in the 2 of course.

About the last La villette gig, I was there working for Steve and I video taped this very good concert.
Ill try to work on it soon but im a bit overwelmed by my work at the moment.

i was not workin the all tour this time because it was too short a tour.

I was in La Villette only.

this is an incredible experience for me and it offers me the opportunity to meet a lot of very interesting musicians.

Steve is a great cat and i learnt a lot from him, not only in a business level Wink

Unbelievable that you not only met him, but worked for and with him.
I thought I was in heaven when I was able to meet and get David Gilmore's auto while touring with Trilok Gurtu.

Peace

Yes Motherland Pulse refers to Africa. But more specifially to the African influence that still beats like a pulse within this music. I was mainly just going on intuition at that time (1985) but I could feel and hear the connection between West African music and the music that I had learned while growing up in Chicago (not listening to music that was just from Chicago, but all over the States). So I always heard that there was this African thread or pulse that still resided in the music (African Retention) and I related to that very much. This song was referring to that, and as someone mentioned the bass drum just helped to symbolize this pulse.

Hello friend,

No, I don't have any of his solo music. For years I was on a kick of finding all of SC members music. I picked up twenty or thirty Smitty CDs, even a Graham Haynes CD, but at the time David didn't have any solo work that I could find.

David is an incredible guitarist. I love his comfortable approach to music. His work with Trilok Gurtu, a live performance that I saw here in Seattle, was truly amazing.

Thanks for the tip, sir. I'll keep his solo work in mind as I purchase more music....hopefully soon.

Thanks for the insight, Steve. Its amazing to hear the words of the actual artists, as it removes any guess work.
