Hello Dim, my friend,

I just wanted to download the 2 shows Metrics, Hamburg 23.11.1995 and Five Elements Padova, 19.10.2002 as written in your list (available on ftp), but cannot found it on your ftp server. Any help??

Thanks so much!!
Take care,
Rico

PS:
Another question: what is the reason that Coleman changed his mind to share his records "no commercial" on his website and via your special Archive website?? I can remember the time he got very angry when he saw that a friend of mine taped him at Quasimodo Jazz Club in Berlin in the early 90's and he told the taper that he will stop the whole show and want that he have to gave up the DAT tape at the Security man.

Hey Rico,

how is the young Dimitri Going Very Happy

About the files you are looking for, I willo check when Ill be back home later this evening.

About the fact that Steve is now ok to have his archives and most of his music available for free....well I cant answer for him but Ill say what I think and what I know.

I also get caught by Sophia Wong, his manager when taping the Rameses 2000 Project, but I had 2 Dat machine recording the gig héhé...

Back in february 2002 I conctacted him when he was playing at the Amiens festival. Earlier in 2001 We had some email exchange about this subject and I felt he was very interrested by the idea of providing free music thru the internet.
Keep in mind Steve is very up to date about everythjing around computer's, internet, new technologies etc.

So We met in early 2002 and I was already collecting archives since 1993 so I had quiet a few bootlegs and I explained to him how I wanted to set up a website with his archives.
I showed him a basic website and I explained to him I was already collecting music around trading circles in the internet.

He agreed on me building the website and make it online and I started the website on march 20th, 2002.

From my point of view, the idea of selling Cd's is obsolete, idea from last century king
It is so easy to have music for free that you should take that into account.

I would say that in my opinion CD's is like a marketing tool to bring people to live shows and concerts.
The best thing in music is that you can see the musicians playing live, Man I love Steve 's music on CD's but this is nothing in comparison to seeing him playing live.

Steve's concerts tickets are in the normal price range and for 25€, even less, you can see a live recording which is a truly unique experience.

Im thinking of the future something like this :

You provide some of your music thru free means, internet downloads etc.
People like your music and they pay to see you perform.
You provide some more exclusive content for a reasonnable price, thru internet for example (videos, teaching lessons on videos etc).

Well it is my idea, not steve's and I hope he will answer your question directly.

Hope to see you soon Rico,

Dim.

PostSubject: Steve Colemans New "Free Available" Philosophy   Tue 17 Oct à 18:21

Hey Dim,

thanks for your quick answer!! As you know I'm a huge Jazz collector and I'm interested in the Music of Steve Coleman for many, many years. My bootlegs started in 1981, later with Mel Lewis and Dave Holland, before he started to perform with his own Bands. I know from old friends of mine that he NEVER tolerate tapers. The funny thing is that there exists hundret of bootlegs taped by great enthusiasts of his fantastic and not comparable music!

When you started the webpage here, we started to exchange our first Coleman shows too and later it was a big pleasure und surprise for me to read the new phiosophy of free available music on his website. I think it is ok to buy his commercial CD's...no problem at all. But I also think that Jazz must be heard LIVE in a club....more and more young friends of mine go to concerts and spend her money for concert tickets and buy there CD's directly from the nmusicians and say "Thanks man for the great Music and healing and happiness of your music. To see the eyes of the musicians is another thing as to buy it in an impersonal music store. It's a great idea to built a possibility to get the Live Concerts for free and I think this is the modern and ONLY way to connect the fans in this century. The Internet is the platform of all young people...they hates the big music industry and there commercial politics. They just found there own ways to listen to the music and more and more musicians take this big chance of the internet to spread their music....and thats ok....and I'm sure exactly this people and fans will go to the concerts...I do it and I think more and more will do the same.

I find Steve's philosophy for free available music is one evidence of his progressive and multicultural philosophy of life which is a important aspect also of his complex music. He don't talk about it...he just do it!! And this fact makes him one of the biggest musician in the world!!

And...he is not the only musician who is interested in his own bootlegs...few months ago David Gilmore wrote me and just asked for some Master Tapes from my collection when he was a sideman with Wayne Shorter Band and Steve Coleman...so I find it is also a nice way for the musician himself to get some historic or current documents of their musical career.

About the ftp: Could you add following shows on your ftp??:

Rico,

Could you post your request in the "Request" section please, easier for me to answer there.

To continue the discussion :

Before the internet, the will to control what was bootlegged was right in my view.
Some people build communities where they were selling stuff they had taped, without any agreement from the musicians.
I bought some Hendrix bootlegs for equivalent of 30Euros for 2 CD's and the quality was so poor...

So I understand the fact that some musicians wnted to "control" and forbid the taping.

But now, with the technologies availble and the internet it is too late.
When I started working for Steve in early 2003, I was tracking the people with camera, asking them not to film because very often it could disturb the musicians on stage.
2 years later, the camera are so small I cant even see them Laughing
I got one friend who could record 100 hour of video in his cellphone, he sent me some videos and the quality is amzingly good !

When Steve agreed on having me digitalizing his archives, it was very good because now I can have the soundboard recordings from the show I had previously as Audience.
this is a good way to say, hey we have the best quality avaialble here for free, dont go buying some bad stuff out there !

Dim.

PS : I'd love to have the gigs you mentionned, if possible contact me thru mail and if you can send them to me Ill make it available for the community.
PS 2 : For those who dont know, Rico is one of the guy who helped me a lot collecting archives in the past, many shows I have now comes from him. thanks for that Rico cheers
