| Mr Swunk,
How do you like Pad Thai? Here, Lake is the total groove drummer, but he's incredibly tight. He's as tight as Smith could have ever been, and also plays with Smith's power and control. You can hear the confidence of Lake dripping off his kit. This is a fantastic example of Lake at his best. It should be noted, however, that the recording process itself can make a drummer sound weak and unconfident. Not sure why that is, but I've heard it in my own recordings.
Ironically, one of the things that I love most about this tune is the piano solo. This is the kind of solo that I've always wanted from Coleman's piano players. A bit more of a traditional approach. Really, the pianist sounds like Coleman on Alto Sax outside of the chords being played.
Awesome track! |

| I like comparing the two versions of Pad Thai we have in Steve's recordings : the one in Def Trance Beat with Gene Lake on drums, and the other one in The Resistance is Futile with Sean Rickman on drums...
This two drummers bring something different, and I really like the two versions, though I have a preference for the one with S. Rickman, who's my favourite drummer !! He brings somethings more dancing that I really enjoy ! |

| Yea freewheelin' he plays very tight but i would say he's as tight as "at least" Smith can be. I listened smith like millions of times and i never heard any mistakes from him, he is like a bionic drummer, inhuman! . Here, I hear gene pulling the groove between 00:20-00:25... But all in all gene plays awesome there! Thnx dim for that song, i here coleman in trouble there |
