The room in which the band is playing here is narrow and gloomy. The rhythm section (two e-basses and Sean Rickman on drums) sticks in dark corners and is hardly visible. The camera is uneasy, sometimes out of focus, contorted or aiming at the darkness. But Steve Coleman, Jonathan Finlayson and Gregoire Maret on harp are visible well and closely. The roughness of the recording is in line with the manner of such experiences: In an ambiance which reflects drastically the inhospitality of urban reality you are exposed to loud and hard sounds. Alone the spatial narrowness produces closeness and togetherness. It is a bit like a Woodoo ritual act in the underground. You can see the musicians act very spontaneously and you encounter the inebriating dimensions in which musicians seem to sail. · This recording convey that impression.
